Rosehip Oil Uses – Is this the New Retinol?

Follow 40andholding on WordPress.com

I discovered Rosehip Oil on a trip to my local health food store a couple of years ago & I’ve been obsessed with it ever since!  And I am not alone… Celebrities like Victoria’s Secret Supermodel, Miranda Kerr and Actresses, Rose Byrne, Gwyneth Paltrow & Keira Knightley use Rosehip Oil.  They all credit this oil as the secret to their glowing, radiant complexion. The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton used this during her pregnancy to maintain her flawless skin!

What exactly is it and what are the Benefits and Uses of Rosehip Oil?  Let’s dive right in and find out!

Who Can Use Rosehip Oil?

Rosehip Seed Oil is a dry oil and can be used by all skin types.  It is not greasy and easily absorbed into the skin.

What is Rosehip Oil?

Harvested from the seeds of rose bushes primarily grown in Chile, Rosehip Oil is extracted using a cold-pressed method that separates the oil from the seeds and hips.  It is full of antioxidants and essential fatty acids like vitamin E, vitamin C and B-carotene.  But perhaps the biggest hype around this oil is that it contains trans-retinoic acid, a natural form of vitamin A, also known as Retinol.

Retinol is widely known as the “holy grail” of treatments for wrinkles and for good reason.  Retinol is the only topical ingredient clinically proven by bazillions (or something close to that) of studies to literally slow down your skin’s aging process by increasing collagen production and decreasing collagen breakdown. It is because of this ingredient, that Rosehip Oil is often marketed as an all natural alternative to Retinol.

Is Rosehip Oil as good as Retinol?

The short answer to this question is NO.  But it isn’t that cut and dry.  To break it down, experts agree that the amount of Vitamin A found in most rosehip oils won’t be enough to have the same effect on your skin as retinol.  In simple terms, it won’t be as effective at improving or treating wrinkles.  However, the levels of vitamins C and A in rosehip oil will still act as protective antioxidants for your skin.  They will still help even out your complexion, soften, brighten, firm and provide moisturization to the skin.  If you are someone with sensitive skin that can’t tolerate a traditional Retinol product or someone who prefers an all natural product, this is still a good alternative.  There are anti-aging benefits to be had here and a little bit of Vitamin A/Retinol is better than none.

Rosehip Oil Uses & Benefits

Anti-Aging

Rosehip Oil contains natural beauty essentials like fatty acids and Vitamins A and C.  All of which provide anti-aging benefits

Skin Brightening/Reverse Sun Damage, Dark Spots

The Vitamin C and astringent properties in Rosehip Oil help tighten pores, brighten the skin & even out skin tone.  The antioxidants in Rosehip Oil assist in repairing damage from the Sun’s harmful UV rays while the essential fatty acid content improves skin tone, pigmentation and texture.  Rosehip Seed Oil is also a natural source of vitamin E, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that calms and hydrates sensitive and dry skin, including sun damaged skin.

Treatment of Scars

Essential fatty acids may help improve the appearance of scars and marks on skin.  They may also be able to promote skin regeneration, which can help new skin growth.  Rosehip Seed Oil is a natural source of omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids, which help repair and regenerate damaged skin while reducing the appearance of scars.

Nails

Rosehip Seed Oil can be used on Nails to restore strength and hydration.  Simply massage a drop of oil onto the Nails and Cuticles at Night.

Hair

Rosehip Oil contains vitamins A, C, and E, which can help put the shine back in dull hair. Massage a few drops of Rosehip Oil into your hair and let it sit for a few minutes before washing.

Mix with Foundation

Add a couple drops of rosehip oil to your Foundation for a fresh-faced, dewy look.

Mix with Body Cream or Moisturizer

This is something I do every night.  Because, why not?  Simply add a few drops of rosehip oil to your body cream or moisturizer to transform it into an all over anti-aging treatment for the body.

Use as a Lip Oil

Apply directly to your lips for a hydrating treatment.

Hands

Apply Rosehip Oil to your hands to soften them and treat age spots.

What to Look For When Purchasing Rosehip Seed Oil

Quality Rosehip Seed Oil should be certified organic, cold-pressed and wild harvested.  Cold pressed oil has a shelf life and can become rancid.  It’s important to keep an eye on the expiration date on the bottle.  Keep the Oil in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.  Rosehip Oil should be a bright, vibrant, orange color.

Here are a few high quality Rosehip Oils to try..

  1. Susie, this was so informative! I have heard of rose hip oil but never knew what it did. It sounds like something I’d use on my lips. My skin is pretty oily so I don’t know if I’d use it on my face but it is definitely worth looking into!
