I have always been foundation challenged. I generally don’t like a powder foundation and I have tried many liquid foundations that I simply hated. There are so many choices when it comes to shades and brands, I find it overwhelming! Once we reach the age of 40, it becomes even more difficult to find the Best Makeup Foundations for Women Over 40.
As we age, it gets even worse as we have to worry about foundation settling into fine lines and wrinkles and actually making us look OLDER than we actually are. Goodness gracious, who needs that?? We have to worry about hormones and the constant changes that we see in our skin. One day it’s normal, the next day it’s dry, the next day it’s combination…. you ladies over a certain age know what I mean! You get it!
Here is my criteria for a good foundation that I would consider using every day…
- Applies easily with fingers, sponge or brush.
- Doesn’t settle into fine lines & wrinkles.
- Doesn’t make pores appear larger.
- Provides a finish that is not shiny (luminous is ok, but not shiny!) and doesn’t become shiny throughout the day.
- Provides a finish that lasts all day.
- Doesn’t transfer onto clothing.
- Makes my skin look better than it is.
Not too much to ask, right?
After much trial and error..
I have discovered three foundations fit all or at least the majority of the above. Below are three of my favorite foundations that have passed the Over 40 test. There are two liquid foundations and one mineral foundation which is a powder formula.
I have been using this mineral makeup foundation for over 20 years. It is one of my all time favorites and literally is good for any age skin. It is by far the best mineral makeup for women over 40.The first time I used this mineral makeup foundation it was a Where Have You Been All My Life moment. Click To Tweet
Bare Minerals Original Foundation is a mineral makeup with buildable coverage and a natural-looking, radiant finish. It does not settle into lines and wrinkles, looks very natural and provides a semi-matte, radiant (not shiny) finish on normal to combination skin. My favorite thing about this foundation is that is literally takes about 30 seconds to apply. The company’s “swirl, tap and buff” method makes it quick and easy. Basically you just shake a small amount into the lid, swirl your brush into it, tap off the excess and buff it into your skin. A little goes a long way and you can build it to the coverage you are looking for.
TIP: In recent years, Bare Minerals has come out with several other foundations including a pressed powder and liquid foundation. I have tried them all and always revert back to the Original Formula.

Algenist Reveal Serum Foundation SPF 15
This is a lightweight liquid foundation with buildable coverage. Algenist claims that the Reveal Serum Foundation “combines AlgaCorrecting Complex, Alguronic Acid and Microalgae Oil to instantly color correct, smooth skin, and cover imperfections.” I was pleasantly surprised by this foundation. It goes on very smoothly and dries nicely leaving your skin with a nice healthy glow (not oily). It covers well and is buildable. I did not find that is color correcting. It does cover blemishes and other flaws nicely. I use the Bare Minerals Smoothing Face Foundation Brush when applying this foundation. This is a full coverage multi-tasker that goes on smoothly and doesn't settle into lines or wrinkles. It Cosmetics describes this CC Cream as “a multi-tasking correcting cream that is true scientific breakthrough. It’s packed with anti-aging ingredients that is clinically shown to improve skin and works on all ages, that doesn’t crease or crack!”
I would agree with that description. It Cosmetics CC Cream is best applied with your fingers or a brush and never settles into fine lines and wrinklles. It provides a luminous finish that can have a tendency to get a bit shiny later in the day. To combat this problem, I always use a little setting powder on top of the CC Cream. Unless your skin is very dry, I would recommend applying a setting powder or using a mattifying primer underneath.
The absolutely best thing about the It Cosmetics CC Cream? It has an SPF50 which is a HUGE Plus and saves the step of having to apply sunscreen prior to applying foundation.
Have you tried any of these Foundations? What is your favorite makeup foundation? As always, I’d love to hear from you! Please leave your comments below!
