Best Makeup Foundations Over 40

I have always been foundation challenged. I generally don’t like a powder foundation and have tried many liquid foundations that were a bust. There are so many choices when it comes to shades and Brands, I find it overwhelming!  Add to that… aging skin and it becomes even more difficult to find the Best Makeup Foundations for Women Over 40.

As we age, we have to worry about foundation settling into fine lines and wrinkles and actually making us look OLDER than we are.  Goodness gracious, who needs that??  We have to worry about hormones and the constant changes that we see in our skin.  One day it’s normal, the next day it’s dry, the next day it’s combination…. you ladies over a certain age know what I mean!  You get it!

What are the Best Makeup Foundations for Women Over 40?

Here is the criteria for a good foundation that I would consider using every day…

  • Applies easily with fingers, sponge or brush.
  • Doesn’t settle into fine lines & wrinkles.
  • Doesn’t make pores appear larger.
  • Provides a finish that is not shiny (luminous is ok, but not shiny!) and doesn’t become shiny throughout the day.
  • Provides a finish that lasts all day.
  • Doesn’t transfer onto clothing.
  • Makes my skin look better than it is.

Not too much to ask, right?

After much trial and error..

I have discovered three foundations that tick all of the boxes.  Below are three of my favorite foundations that have passed the Over 40 test.  There are two liquid foundations and one mineral foundation which is a powder formula.

Bare Minerals Original Foundation SPF 15

I have been using this mineral makeup foundation for over 20 years. It is one of my all time favorites and literally is good for any age skin. 15 year olds can use it and 80 year olds can use it.  It is by far one of the best mineral makeups for women over 40.

Bare Minerals Original Foundation is a mineral makeup with buildable coverage and a natural-looking, radiant finish.  It does not settle into lines and wrinkles, looks very natural and provides a semi-matte, radiant (not shiny) finish on normal to combination skin.  My favorite thing about this foundation is that is literally takes about 30 seconds to apply.  The Brand’s “swirl, tap and buff” method makes it quick and easy.  Basically you just shake a small amount into the lid, swirl your brush into it, tap off the excess and buff it into your skin.  A little goes a long way and you can build it to the coverage you are looking for.

Bare Minerals Original Foundation is available in in 30 shades.  I use the fairly light shade.  Bare Minerals Original Foundation also comes in a matte formula for those with combination to oily skin.

Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation

This is a lightweight liquid foundation with buildable coverage.  Charlotte Tilbury claims the Beautiful Skin Foundation  “gives everyone skin that looks beautifully HYDRATED, PLUMPER, SMOOTHER and BRIGHTER!  This medium coverage, hydrating foundation has been expertly formulated with skincare ingredients to combine instant glow and buildable coverage with long-term skincare benefits.”

I absolutely love this foundation.  It is available in 30 shades, goes on very smoothly and leaves your skin with a nice healthy glow (not shiny or oily).   It covers blemishes and other flaws nicely and never settles into fine lines.  I have been wearing this Foundation all Summer and it holds up in the South Carolina heat & humidity very well.  This foundation is best applied with your fingers or a foundation brush.

It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream with SPF 50

It Cosmetics describes the Your Skin But Better CC Cream as “a multi-tasking correcting cream that is true scientific breakthrough. It’s packed with anti-aging ingredients that is clinically shown to improve skin and works on all ages, that doesn’t crease or crack!”

I would agree with that description.  It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream is best applied with your fingers or a brush and never settles into fine lines and wrinkles.  It provides a radiant finish that can have a tendency to get a bit shiny later in the day.  To combat this problem, I always use a little setting powder on top of the CC Cream.  Unless your skin is very dry, I would recommend applying a setting powder or using a mattifying primer underneath.

The absolutely best thing about the It Cosmetics CC Cream?  It has SPF50 which is a HUGE Plus and saves the extra step of having to apply sunscreen prior to applying foundation.

  1. I have extreme Rosacea, with bright red “clown “”cheeks and major sensitivity issues. Very fair skin. I use Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream SPF 30 as an overall base, with IT CC Cream SPF50 over the red cheeks. I’m 58 yrs. old, and have the best textured skin with this combo. No settling into lines, no streaking, no excess shine. Just smooth, even, non-irritating coverage. Thought you’d like to know.

    • Thank you so much for sharing that! I haven’t tried the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream. Will have to look into it. It’s nice when you find a combination that really works!??xoxo Susie
