Covergirl TruBlend Matte Made Liquid Foundation Review

First of all, let’s take a moment to send a huge kudos to Covergirl!  In November, 2018, Covergirl announced they were now 100% Cruelty-free, becoming the first Beauty Brand of its size to earn the Leaping Bunny Cruelty-free Seal.  This is a huge win for cruelty-free advocates and let’s hope that the other major beauty brands will follow suit.

Covergirl has had a lot of foundations over the years.  When I was in high school, I wore Covergirl Clean Makeup Liquid Foundation in the shade Creamy Natural.  That foundation has been around since the company was founded in 1961 and it’s still a favorite of scores of women today.  It’a funny, I can’t remember a thing I learned in Algebra in High School but I know exactly what makeup foundation, blush & lipstick I wore!  Priorities, right?

Now that we’ve got that bit of trivia out of the way, let’s move on to Covergirl’s newest foundation, TruBlend Matte Liquid Foundation.  I recently picked it up and have been testing it to see how performs on Over 40, mature, less than perfect skin. Let’s take a look!

The Claim

The claims on this foundation are pretty big!  According to Covergirl, TruBlend Matte Made Foundation is “a matte formula that isn’t drying or cakey. TruBlend Matte Made’s formula is developed with flexi-hold technology that creates a strong, yet flexible film on skin for durability and comfort, while the mattifying powders absorb oil and minimizes pores for a soft matte, flawless finish. Up to 12 hours of wear. 12 HR COMFORT MATTE PORE MINIMIZING OIL CONTROL TRANSFER RESISTANT ALL IN 40 SHADES”.

Formula & Packaging

Covergirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation is a liquid foundation that comes packaged in a glass jar with a pump.  The consistency is a creamy texture that is not too thick or too runny.  The formula is oil-free.

Ingredients

Cruelty Free

Covergirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation is a silicone based foundation with 3 of the first 10 ingredients being silicones.  This foundation does contain talc and fragrance (the fragrance is not heavy and quickly goes away after application).  While I personally do not have an issue with talc, there are some people who find it drying and have an issue with it clogging pores.  TruBlend Matte Made does not contain alcohol and unfortunately, there is no Spf protection in this foundation.

Shade Selection

TruBlend Matte Made Foundation’s shade selection is excellent for a drugstore brand with a broad range of 40 shades to choose from.  The shades are broken down by skin tone into four categories and coded as follows:  (L) Light, (M) Medium, (D) Deep and (T) Tan.  I picked this foundation up in the shade L20, Light Ivory and it’s a perfect match for my fair to light cool toned skin.

Covergirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation is available in a whopping 40 shades ranging from Light to Deep and both warm, cool and neutral tones.

Application & Coverage

TruBlend Matte Made Liquid Foundation is a creamy texture that blends well and melts into the skin.  I applied 1 pump using a blending sponge and true to the brand’s claim, this foundation dries to a flawless, matte finish.  1 pump provides light to medium coverage.  To build to full coverage, I would suggest using 2 pumps.  The foundation did a good job of evening out my skin tone, covering redness and it did not settle into fine lines, wrinkles or pores.

The Wear Test

On Day 1, I tested this foundation without a primer using a sunscreen (Bare Republic Mineral Face Lotion SPF 30) underneath.  I applied using the L’oreal Infallible Blend Artist Foundation Blender (pictured above).  The wear time was very good.  After 6 hours, the foundation looked good with no blotchiness or shine.  After 8 hours, there was some wearing off and redness around the nose but overall the coverage still looked good.  At 12 hours, coverage had worn off around the nose and chin and some redness was showing through.

On Day 2, I used the same sunscreen and added a Primer.  I used a new favorite, Milk Makeup Blur Stick Matte Primer and applied the Foundation using the same L’oreal Foundation Blender.  The foundation applied easily over the primer with a smooth finish and no settling into pores, fine lines or wrinkles.  At 8 hours, the coverage was looking great with no shine and no redness.  At 12 hours, some redness was showing through around the nose but overall it still looked pretty good and still no shine!

On a side note, Covergirl claims this foundation is “Transfer-proof”.  It is not.  It does transfer onto clothing and phone screens. That being said, I have never discovered a foundation that was transfer proof and I wish Brand’s would just stop making that claim.

Price

$11.49 USD for 1.0 oz.

Final Verdict

Overall, this foundation is very impressive.  Covergirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation’s creamy texture blends well and dries to a flawless matte finish.  It doesn’t settle into pores, fine lines or wrinkles and has excellent wear time of up to 12 hours using a Primer underneath.  Let’s have a look at the Pros & Cons.

Pros:

  • Doesn’t settle into pores, fine lines or wrinkles
  • True to Covergirl’s claim of a matte finish
  • Stays matte throughout the day
  • Medium to Full Coverage covers redness and evens out skin tone
  • Wears well with or without a primer
  • Wears well under sunscreen
  • No drying alcohol in the ingredients
  • Affordable Price
  • Excellent Shade Range
  • Pump Dispenser

Cons:

  • Requires a Primer to achieve the Brand’s claim of 12 hour wear time
  • Is NOT transfer proof as the Brand Claims
  • Contains Talc which some find drying and irritating to the skin

I think this is an excellent foundation.  If you’re looking for an affordable, liquid foundation with a matte finish, light to full coverage with good wear time and no issues with fine lines, wrinkles or pores, this may be the one for you!  I would definitely put this in the Top 5 of drugstore foundations that I’ve tried.

  1. Great review! I remember my very first foundation back in the day was from Covergirl, and I loved it! While I don’t tend to wear foundation on the day to day basis, I should check this one out for special events 🙂

  2. Did you have any issues with the foundation oxidizing? I really want to like Covergirl foundations, but I find that they usually turn 1-2 shades too dark with an orangey cast after an hour or two of wear, even if the shade was perfect for me when I put it on. ☹️
I also used to wear the Covergirl Clean Makeup Foundation in high school. It always used to turn orange on me then, too. Of course, back then the best I could do was grab the palest shade they had and hope it was close enough to the right shade of pale.

    • I didn’t have any problems with this Foundation oxidizing. I know what you mean though as I had that problem with Covergirl Clean as well. Perhaps they’ve figured it out or this one is a different formula that doesn’t have that issue.🤷‍♀️

  3. I love this makeup…started using it as soon as I saw their television ad. I was not disappointed and now wear it daily. I enjoyed your review and agree with all you write…except…I have found if I let it set a few minutes after applying…it does not transfer to my top, scarf, or winter coat. I use Neutrogena facial sunblock 110% underneath and this foundation goes on beautifully. I am in my late 60s and am thoroughly enjoying the compliments I have been receiving about my face and skin since using this foundation. It’s a winner for me!

    • I’m so happy to hear it’s working for you Janet! It really is a great foundation. And thanks for the tip to help with transfer! I will definitely give that a try!💕💕
